• Responsible for political repression and human rights violations during his Presidency
• Enjoys luxury lifestyle including multi-million dollar palaces and yachts

• 42% of the population lives on just $1 a day (UN report)
• Since the Tsunami, which severely hit the Maldivian economy, President Gayoom has not cut down on any of his living expenses 
• Under his presidency $41.1 million is spent on the military annually

• A key pillar of the regime, since his appointment there have been numerous reports of torture and custodial killings in Maldivian prisons

• Active member of the business community, Maldivian National Chamber of Commerce and Industries and MATI.

DRP: Maldivian People’s Party founded and led by President Gayoom since political parties were allowed late June 2005 in the Maldives. The DRP has assumed power without ever  having faced an election and continues to refuse Maldivians free and fair multi-party elections.
